Josephs, Wilfred

Wilfred Josephs (1927-1997) was born in Newcastle. His early musical studies were with Arthur Milner but at the encouragement of his parents towards a ‘proper’ career, he qualified as a dentist in 1951 from the University of Durham. He later studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Alfred Nieman and then with Max Deutsch in Paris. After winning the first International Composing Competition of the City of Milan and La Scala with his Requiem (1963), he relinquished dentistry to become a full-time composer. Considerable success followed with the composition of twelve symphonies, twenty-two concertos, chamber music, vocal works, operas and ballets, and a comprehensive output of work for television and film.
