Nelson’s setting of a New England folk melody comprises four complete verses of the eight-measure tune plus a truncated final statement serving as coda. The text could suit nearly any Sunday in the green season, speaking in general terms of pilgrimage, manifestation through nature, and providence. The idiomatic, rugged harmonizations vary somewhat from verse to verse and the piano decorates the texture with an increasing amount of activity throughout the piece. The coda is sung in unison with some effective modal twists to the piano accompaniment but ending firmly in the home key of G major.
