Jesu, Thy Boundless Love to Me
Robert J. Powell
A lyrical text from John Wesley and Edward Caswall form the basis of this lilting piece. Powell adds the lovely color of the flute to the mix while the vocal parts and organ have an attractive flowing quality.
Using the melody of RESIGNATION from Southern Harmony, this setting has two verses and a coda; the flute has simple music, but plays throughout much of the work. The unison first verse could be sung by a soloist. The second verse is the only true SATB section, and the last half of it is unaccompanied; the coda, in a new key, is also in unison. Easy organ music on two staves gives the music a flowing style. The sensitive text ends with a hopeful, positive, and inspirational spirit. — review by James McCray in Diapason, January 2017
