Maxine Thevenot
A brief introit based on words from the Gospel of John, this a cappella work uses a litany-like style to illuminate the text, “In Him was life,” while the rest of the words are woven around these repetitions. The atmosphere created is intimate and moving.
Maxine Thevenot (Cathedral of St. John, Albuquerque, New Mexico) creates in this mystical setting of John 1:4-5 a unique soundscape with spare and harmonious gestures. Sopranos and altos echo each other with simple four-note phrases while tenors sing the melody, the basses supporting them in three-part divisi. Written with two inner repeats, the motet could be sung for as long as one chooses before continuing to the ravishing coda, making this very useful for contemplative worship. Recommended for choirs with very good intonation and confidence.
