Robert Powell’s “Good Shepherd” Service is the only set in this group to use Rite II language. The buoyant rhythmic vitality moves between 3/4 and 4/4 naturally and seamlessly. As with the Adams setting, unison lines abound, and the contrasting homophonic passages always receive solid support from the organ. Additionally, the organ part includes some interesting independence and solo figures both in accompaniment and interludes. The two canticles share one setting of the Gloria Patri, and the entire work is a rousing, sunny take on these familiar texts.
