Description
Passacaglia and Toccata
Edwin Stube
Mr. Stube’s many years as organist show in the colorful registration and comfortable writing for the hands and feet. The Passacaglia theme uses all 12 chromatic tones in a neo-romantic lyrical style that is sustained throughout the work. The textures are transparent, but indeed the movement builds to a satisfying climax and tapers down to a quiet ending. The Toccata is great fun rhythmically, and poses a challenge to the organist with a nimble pedal technique. A contrasting lyrical theme provides a contrast of mood and color and the work ends with an unusual calm.
