This poignant work, from the Orthodox liturgy for Lent, depicts the Mother of our Lord, at the foot of the cross. The composer uses long seamless phrases at a slow tempo to capture Mary’s anguish. Lvov writes for basso profondo throughout the work, often doubling the bass line down the octave.
