Triptych – Brass Parts
David Ashley White
Triptych is an exciting addition to the repertoire for brass and organ. The movements are written with the melodic and harmonic invention for which David Ashley White is known. The opening Prelude exploits the melodic aspects of the brass quintet and gives the organist much opportunity for the use of solo voices. The Capriccio is a delightful romp of ever-changing rhythms and sharp dynamic contrasts. The work closes with a Hymn, with melodic writing reminiscent of the first movement. The work ends in great majesty with a rich setting of the original material. “Triptych” would be especially effective when done as a whole, but the individual movements can also be performed separately.
