Vespers Op. 5: Maloye slavosloviye – The Lesser Doxology
Aleksei Shipovalnikov is a native of Russia and his rich musical gifts follow in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors. The present piece is another movement from his setting of the Vespers Op. 5. “Glory to God in the Highest” exclaim the women at the opening while all parts express the text of the second section: “Open thou my lips. 0 Lord.” The eight part writing is close creating a rich sonority while the bass part is written with a wide range in mind requiring a low D in several measures. As in all pieces in this series Dr. Anthony Antolini provides background notes and an idiomatic English singing translation.
