Thompson, Robert

Bob has worked in church music for 60 years, starting out on a Hammond organ in a small-town Baptist church in Texas. He graduated from S.M.U. with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree before receiving a Fullbright Scholarship to study with Helmut Walcha in Germany learning all of the major J. S. Bach organ works from this world famous blind Bach virtuoso. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan by the age of 29, where he was also a teaching fellow in Music Theory and Score Reading. Bob has performed throughout the U. S. and Europe as well as editing two volumes of organ works by F. W. Marpurg. He has been heard in recordings and on radio and television. His two career paths have been 16 years of teaching at St. Olaf College and 20 years as Choirmaster/Organist and Manager of Concerts at Alll Souls’ Episcopal Church, San Diego. He “retired” to Eugene in 2005, where he has been a percussionist in Eugene’s Symphonic Band, bass singer in the Eugene Concert Choir and a bass section leader in Central Lutheran’s Chorale.

Never content to stop learning, Bob studied television production in Eugene then directed and produced several full-length shows for the Eugene local access channel. He is now in his sixth year as organist at the First Presbyterian Church, Corvallis.

Moving to Corvallis in 2016 provided him with more opportunities to participate in the local music scene as a free-lance keyboardist, percussionist in the Corvallis Community Band and volunteer for various organizations including the Whiteside Theatre Foundation, the Willamette Valley Symphony and the Corvallis Youth Symphony.
