Useful as either an anthem or a congregational hymn of praise, this setting of Canticle Two achieves great effect from minimal materials. Melodic phrases grow organically from a handful of motivic gestures based on the chord tones of the tonic, D Major. The organ part doubles the choir in passages of four part harmony and supplies rhythmic accents during unison singing. The Gloria Patri rounds out the setting without repeating any section verbatim. This is clearly work of an accomplished composer in full command of his talent.
