Christmas Prelude – for Organ

Based on the Gregorian chant “Puer natus est nobis,” this brief organ work is improvisatory in style, with static chords in the left hand and flutes in the right hand paraphrasing the chant melody. This could be used as an introduction to the chant as well as a seasonal prelude.
Zvonimir Nagy’s Christmas Prelude is another short work that would be lovely as a communion piece or part of a Christmas prelude. It is a short, free improvisation on the chant Puer natus est and also includes a quotation of one of the plainsong psalm tones. I think that it is effective, although many of us could probably improvise something just as good. At $2.50 it is worth a look, even if only for ideas for one’s own improvisation.
