Charles Wesley’s text is given a plaintive and attractive setting by Franklin Ashdown. Ashdown is well-known for his anthems and here he provides imaginative and sensitive music for the thought-provoking text. Each verse is set to different music, yet the spirit of lyricism is maintained throughout. Only in the final verse does the music become stronger with the emphasis on the theme of Love. This would be a fine anthem for penitential seasons and choirs of all abilities.
