Robert Farrell’s setting of Fairest Lord Jesus is peaceful and elegant, consisting of one slow statement of the theme in the pedal on a solo stop. Phrases are separated by interludes. The accompaniment on two manuals is unified by a Baroque-style figure, although the general spirit of the piece is in the Romantic tradition. There may be an over-reliance on this accompaniment gesture, but the overall effect of the piece is sweet and uncomplicated. It would make an attractive communion interlude.
