How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place Op.206
Peter Pindar Stearns
This is a particularly melodious setting of this famous text from Psalm 84. Stearns has established a reputation for gracious melodies and memorable lyricism and this anthem is no exception. A quiet opening from the organ sets the spirit of the work immediately and the lovely, flowing motion of the choral writing is a particular highlight of this setting. Indeed, the organ acts as not only partner, but a “fifth” voice,” supporting the singers while providing its own statement. The vocal range stays in the center of the voices, giving a relaxed feel to the overall impression. This is a welcome new setting of this timeless text.
