Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Donald Nally
This is a significant addition to the Advent repertoire. Mr. Nally has set a classic text to music of intense expression and anticipation. Four of the five verses share a mildly dissonant style with an interesting chromaticism at the refrain of “Christ the Apple Tree.” The central verse is lighter and brighter in spirit reflecting the “glory which now I can see.” the music is set primarily in the middle voice with phrases of a elegant sweep and breadth. The coda develops the refrain into more expansive lyricism and the motet ends in peace. This work is also an excellent choice for Carol concerts.
