This imaginative setting of the Evening Canticles features an expressive use of both close and wide intervals, particularly the 2nd and the 7th. This contributes to the distinctively neo-classical sound that Mr. James creates in this work. In its constantly changing harmonies and rhythms, the Magnificat has an implusive energy that drives it to the”Gloria”. The “Nunc Dimiitis” features a lovely solo for baritone and a more inward setting of the text. This setting will provide a distinctive and fresh setting of these beloved words for the service of Evensong.
