A “short mass” setting written for voices a cappella that hearkens back to a Renaissance style. Written by the distinguished New York composer who has also written for Jessye Norman and many New York choirs.

Subtitled Missa Brevis, only three movements are used; both the Gloria and the Credo are missing. The Sanctus is divided into three sections including short settings of the Hosanna and Benedictus. There is no keyboard reduction of the parts. There are some haunting, yet dissonant moments in the Kyrie. The tender Agnus Dei is very contrapuntal and, at times, a bit surprising. Charming, elegant music that is recommended to the urbane and experienced church choir.
