This set of Preces and Responses was written as a companion to the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis of James Wallace (9923). There is a fluidity and inevitability of phrasing which is very attractive. The chromatic alterations will need attention in rehearsal while the overall effect is one of graceful expression. The text is made clear by the use of the central part of all four voices. These could be used well with other 19th and 20th century settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis.
