Sing Aloud and Shout for Joy
Kent A. Newbury
Kent Newbury is well known for his exuberant and irresistibly rhythmic works for the church. This setting of Psalm 81 uses the text “Sing aloud” as its inspiration. Each set of three vocal parts develops the rhythmic motive given at the beginning. The central section juxtaposes a rhythmic theme in the men with a long-breathed melody from the women’s voices. The piece concludes with a fanfare on “Blow the trumpet” and a return of the opening material at “Shout for joy.” The wide range of the vocal parts and quick changes of key are challenges for the accomplished choir. Nevertheless this praise anthem would be welcome for any liturgical season.
