Boles combines fanfare motives, ‘swinging’ compound meters, and an array of solo organ colors the opening text, “Arise, Shine!” The fanfare motives unify the work as the harmonies and rhythms become progressively more complex and the parts divide. The organ accompaniment, though containing the same motivic ideas, is otherwise independent, providing a challenging and colorful “co-worker” with the choral parts.
