Description

Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis On Plainsong Theme-SATB and Organ
Gerald Near
Gerald Near bases this setting of the Evening Canticles on the chant intonation ‘Tonus Peregrinus’ (“the pilgrim”) , so named because of its traditional association with Psalm 113–“When the Israelites came out of Egypt …” Mr. Near’s sensitive text declamation is heard immediately in the opening soprano passage of the “Magnificat” while the balance and unity between the choir and organ reflects his sense of musical completeness. The “Nunc Dimittis” may be effectively used separately as an anthem for the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.
